Call for Submissions: Volume 2 | THE LOVE ISSUE
For our second volume, Roots Magazine is seeking 18–20 creators to explore the multifaceted concept of Love. We are looking for Black and Brown women and gender-nonconforming individuals to dissect love through the lens of womanhood and femininity.
We aren't looking for surface-level romance; we want the marrow. We want to see how love intersects with our survival, our joy, and our identity.
Thematic Focus
We are seeking work that explores the following dimensions of Love:
Platonic & Kinship: The power of sisterhood, community, and chosen family.
Self-Love: The radical act of reclaiming one’s body and spirit.
Familial Ties: Navigating the complexities of blood, heritage, and ancestral affection.
Romantic Love: Authentic, nuanced portrayals of intimacy.
Femininity & Womanhood: How our gender identity shapes the way we give and receive love.
What We Are Looking For
Prose (Think-Pieces, Essays, Short Stories): 800 – 2,000 words.
Poetry: A minimum of 4 poems per submission.
Visual Art: Photography, digital art, or illustrations that speak to the volume’s themes.

Submission Guidelines
To ensure your work is considered, you must follow the protocol on our submission form. Work sent via email or social media will not be reviewed.
Preparation: Have your manuscript ready as a PDF or .Docx.
Poetry Requirements: If submitting poetry, you must include a brief (3–5 sentence) artist statement deep-diving into the themes of your poems.
Bios: Please provide a 100-word bio written in the third person that highlights your journey and identity.
